Gluten-Free Girl Scout Cookies!

Girl Scout Cookies! For Everyone!

Does mention of the Girl Scouts make you think of anything other than cookies?

Probably not.

Ever since going gluten-free, I've had to miss out on this highly anticipated annual purchase.

Thin Mints, Samoas, Trefoils, Do-si-dos.

No doing. None of the above. Not while being gluten-free.

But this year… well, actually last year in September... my neighborhood Girl Scout informed me about their new gluten-free cookies.

Really? Gluten-Free Girl Scout Cookies? For real?

Only available in certain test markets. And lucky me! I happened to be in one of the test markets.

I didn't even care what flavor they were offering! Order me some now, please!

But I knew that I would have to wait. The order goes in, but the cookies wouldn't arrive until November. Wait, I would.

And then November came. And November went.

What happened to my gluten-free cookies?!

Then January came. Finally! My gluten-free Girl Scout Cookies had arrived!

Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread Cookies

Here they are!

They are small.
They are tall.
They are crunchy.
They are munchy!

These gluten-free shortbread cookies are dusty crumbly on the outside and throughout, but the cookie itself is firm and crunchy. They are small, about the size of a quarter. But they are as tall as short stack of quarters, just a bit more than six quarters tall. Generally.

Yes, I checked.

Quite nicely bite-sized.

The chocolate chips tasted good and complemented the shortbread nicely. It just happens to be the darkest colored shortbread I've ever seen or eaten.

At first taste, I thought the shortbread tasted a bit… different. Somewhat not quite normal shortbread. And it does. But then, the expert cookie tasters in my house, with taste buds less than sixteen-years experienced, weighed in.

They taste like crunchy bits of cookie dough.

Some would say that is a good thing. And it immediately made me think that these would be excellent crumbled into vanilla ice cream.

Hmmm… I don't, not even for a single, eensy, teensy, weensy second, think that these will last long enough to ever see the lusciousness of ice cream. Certainly not the ice-cream-appropriate-days-of-summer!

These are quite tasty, crunchy, good, and surprisingly filling. After just two or three, I felt I had had enough. Not because they didn't taste good. They do taste good. It's just that they fill you up.

And just for completeness, you need to know that the picture above is… well... that is the entire bag. The entire contents of the bag. Right there. The whole bag. In one bowl. Not serving bowl. One shallow, soup bowl.

You can find out if your local Girl Scout Council has some Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread Cookies for you by entering your zip code in their cookie finder

Only twenty markets were chosen to test the sale of these gluten-free cookies, so find out if you are lucky like me! If you are lucky, I suggest we buy lots of these, showing the Girl Scouts how important it is to provide a gluten-free option for those of us who need it! Maybe then they will roll them out nationwide!

Thanks, Girl Scouts!
